some people spend their days at the mall 'aquiring more'. some people spend their time doing for others. this is a portrait of friend rita gruener. rita and her husband manfred spend time baking and cooking and then delivering food and goodies to those less fortunate, or friends who are ill. rita and manfred have recently been baking and delivering desserts to my sharing nature groups. they have been doing this for years. rita and manfred, they do acts of beauty, they are art. sitting with rita is don smith who donated tons of plants to the stowe gardens.

this is a portrait of cindy smith and sandy mcgushin who are volunteers who rock. people who could be sipping mint julips at the country club, but instead choose to donate their time to volunteer organizations are art. cindy and sandy donate many hours to many causes including the hill-stead museum and gardens. here they are taking time out to relax from all that hard work.

restoring houses can be an art. antique houses usually need either a lot of love or a lot of money.lol . in lieu of the latter i have bestowed a lot of love and hard work on the several (5 or 6) house restoration projects that i've done. this is the house that i restored on river road, village of unionville, town of farmington, connecticut. this house was tons of work and tons of fun too.

the stowe center entrance garden, original garden design by stevenson, f canning. 1978 and 1990 redesign by rob camp fuoco. in my redesigns of this historic landscape i tried to effect h.b.stowes statement that the gardens were a wonderfully overgrown and lush environment (not verbatim) i think the historic landscape now expresses her vision and intent.

this year the stowe center gardens won an award from the garden club of america. since the 1978 and 1990 redesigns we have received many awards and much publicity. but the greatest reward is to see what joy these gardens give to visitors and staff each day.

this is uncle emil, who was fluent in five or six languages. he started teaching me latin and my sister french when we were at the tender age of five. his loving interest and efforts led to my interest in horticulture and languages. uncle emil is art.

yesterday we brought four groups together: sharing nature, abilities beyond disabilities, the kids clubhouse, and the stowe center. we got to teach them a little about nature and gardens, and got to learn from the beautiful interaction that occurred. this is a picture of jason , who is developmentally disabled ( i think of him as specially gifted and supercharged with love) and a group of beautiful little kids . jason is leading them in exercises in front of the stowe center in hartford. i couldn't help but feel how joyous h b stowe would have felt if she were watching this from above. disparate peoples celebrating what they all share: the joy of life.

these are the children of gaza, one of my passions is to see that they have a fair chance at a peaceful and decent life, like all children should. i am not involved in many political causes but they deserve our help. after a trip to palestine last year i made a video for them which is posted on you tube. google: 'rob camp fuoco video gaza'

this is a painting of a beautiful spot on the farmington river near our old house at river road and rt. 4. the water at this spot is perfectly ice cold in the high summer's when the cool water feels so great.

this year i said goodbye to my '69 chevy 3/4 ton stepside truck. bought this truck about 30 years ago for $500 dollars. the gentleman who i bought it from said it would last a year or two. it slept in the yard for 30 winters and then would happily wake up in the spring to make its ceremonial 1 or 2 trips to the farmington dump. it would hall a few tons of gravel for the terraces and also helped me restore about 5 historic houses. in my eyes it looked almost like new lol. my nephew is taking it to the family farm in vermont to restore it and use it up there. i feel like i have lost an old friend and a beautiful piece of sculpture. good bye old friend

this year our gardens won a national garden club of america award. for the last 35 years we have been making historic and artistic choices for this rose garden. building on the original roses that were planted by kathy day and my partners. its great to see these plants florishing and bringing joy to visitors and my friends at stowe.

these are angel trumpets at beach road. they are also called brugmansia or datura. in south america and africa these plants are used in religious ceremonies because of their narcotic properties. they have an intense odor which most people love , but i find to be a bit 'heady'. (in hindi) थेसे अरे अंगेल त्रुम्पेट्स अत बाच रोड । थे अरे अल्सो काल्लेद ब्रुग्मंसिया और दतुरा.

sometimes people have such an amazing karma and energy around them, it is an inspiration and a privilege to be with them. such is the case with Thom who is a volunteer from abilities beyond disabilities. he is smart, focused and extremely loving to the gardens. just an amazing human being!

this is an iconic photo portrait of the stowe center. it juxtaposes the strength and integrity of the buildings against the delicacy of the white fallen petals of the landscape. the elegant tree dropping white petals is the delicate cladastris lutea , or yellow wood, planted by my beloved partners and friends kitty stevenson and jacque canning.. the rose selection by roberto.

these are this years stowe spring gardens. its fun to create new color combinations each year in the different gardens that i do. tulips are so exquisite that it is hard to make a mistake. this year we used a lot of violets and purple in the south stowe gardens.

day 20 100 days 'nook farm historic landscape'

one of my passions and life's work has been to develop the historic landscape at nook farm. this is a photograph taken after the first restoration that my partners accomplished in the 1960's. they did a magnificent job in putting in the basic landscape. i am proud of the fact that i was able to move the landscape forward by doing two redesigns in 1978 and 1990, which totally respected their work, and did not destroy what they accomplished, but built upon it and moved the landscape forward into the award winning site that it is today.
